#5 of 5 Meditations on Unity. Scripture:

Ephesians 4:4-5—There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.

Reflection: As a believer I find myself surrounded by a unity of purpose and plan that encompasses all that is good, beautiful, noble, and purposeful. Distinctions of race, color, denomination, capability, culture, gender and tradition simply evaporate in the environment of God's unity. This is not a desertion of logical thought or theological truth—but serious admission that we can produce only a sick caricature of unity on our own. Satan loves our great efforts to find unity in form, doctrine, and practice—while we ignore the only real source of unity—the God who is himself perfectly one.

Sadly, we often focus on "our" unity (usually mistaking uniformity for unity) and miss the One God—what more could Satan want? What a vast crowd falls for it! In Christ, we are one body—we have one hope, calling, Lord, faith and baptism. But every bit of this oneness flows from relationship to the One God and Father—that is, when for us He is "above all and through all and in all." Jesus prayed that believers might be "...as you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us…" (Jn 17:21) That's the unity I crave—it is only in Jesus and it reduces our petty uniformities to irrelevancy.

Prayer Starter: Father, make us one in your Son through the unity that comes from your Spirit. Amen.
